Mixtape Review: Delilah - 2-4AM

Tipped as a BBC 1xtra ‘Ones to Watch for 2012’, Delilah first stepped on the music scene under the guide of Chase & Status. Touring for a length of time with them before her debut single ‘Time’ was released, Delilah was like the best kept secret in the industry for a matter of time. Now we just can’t seem to get enough of her!

The songstress hailing from North London has finally blessed us with an 8 track EP titled ‘2-4am’ which you’re going to have to listen to on repeat, because the likelihood is that you’ll get to the end and want more. Yep that’s right, if this was a show, the fans would be screaming for an extra number or two or maybe even three! Her vocals are simply extraordinarily amazing, perfect for those moments when you want to zone out and be lost within the music. If you haven’t already got a copy of this mixtape, you are surely missing out!

Track List
1. Never Be Better
2. Love You So (Joe Goddard's Dub You So Mix)
3. The Gospel
4. Closer
5. Love Drug
6. Lay By
7. Wish I Had Your Life
8. 21

New Music: Destroy & Rebuild EP

I’ve always admired the drive possessed by Princess Nyah, but this Destroy & Rebuild EP has left me a tad confused. I’m guessing the overall idea is pulled together by the title, giving the obvious musical statement. But unfortunately, except from the variation of genres including Drum & Bass, Bassline and Dubstep, and the collaborations stepping out of the Ill Blu comfort zone with appearances from Wiley and NoLay, I fail to see the substantial evident progression that is usually clearly seen when one chooses to “destroy and rebuild”. While I love the attitude Princess Nyah exerts within ‘Do What I Want’, it seems to have taken a holiday for ‘Artillery’. The words are there, but it for some reason I don’t feel like I can take it seriously. It may as well be Cher Lloyd singing or whatever, because the power needed to pull the track off is unfortunately not there. One of those sad musical moments, it may have actually been able to ‘shut this down’ because Nolay’s bars, once you finally get there, are undoubtedly HARD!!!

It's on the grapevyne that an album is on the cards titled Patience and Persistance, due for release later this year. So I’m guessing this EP has been released on a free download, because Princess Nyah has some fresher bangers cooking in the studio. Ones that will cause continuous explosive impacts like we saw from her Diary of a Princess EP. In fact, my favourite track on the Destroy & Rebuild EP is 'Crazy' which funnily enough is also on the previous EP, this time around however production coming from Champion.

New Video: Forgiveness (Freestyle)

Junior Brat vs Rednek Remix

First time I watched this was via my phone on the train home.... The feeling that came over me was similar to that one gets when watching Paranormal Activity at home while alone at night. Needless to say, I felt thankful for my fellow passengers!

I think it was something to do with the contacts....

Anyway, focusing on other than the visual, this is a crazy, trippy, brilliant composition albeit taken from Wretch 32's track of the same name, Junior Brat has added his own edge making it his own. I think it fair to say that Junior Brat is showing through music that he's worth keeping an eye on!

Event Review: ILuvLive - 13th June 2011

Getting myself down to Hoxton Square Bar, I’m feeling a little lost having become accustomed to Cargo. Tonight there’s a venue change and I’m not sure what to expect. Upon arrival I’m not at all disappointed, not only does the venue have a nice light welcoming feel, the food doesn’t taste too bad either. Settling in, I await the show to start while being fed and watered…

Kimba kicks off the show having won the open mic competition at the previous event and although it’s a slow start, he wows the crowd with his second number. It’s soul touching, the kind of track you hope will last forever when chilling with a loved one on a sunny afternoon. Kimba has won over the crowd and exits the stage to applause of appreciation.

Up next is Zemmy who has a very vibrant persona, it can be seen within her that she loves to entertain. Getting into her set, her music has a rock feel that creates an infectious vibe causing the head to subconsciously bop along to the beat. Grateful for her drummer who made and effort to come all the way from Wales and the audience are as appreciative as she is!

Host of the night; Twin introduces Nolay to the stage as “one of the best female emcees in the game” raising the expectations of those in the audience who have never heard her. Nolay's bars come heavy, hypnotizing the audience into her zone. Lyrics are skippy over her beats and the bass player in the house band is not only feeling the vibe but his passion is controlling it. The response received from the audience speaks volumes in decibels as well as statement. Twin reiterates his statement at the end of her set.

After a short interlude with entertainment provided by DJ Melody Kane, Nate Young returns after having reformed himself from Young Nate and takes to the stage. The phones and cameras come out immediately; a simple swap of names hasn’t made any difference to this fan base. Slowing it down for his second number, the tempo is picked back up for the third number titled 'With the Music' and that is exactly how the audience are moving. Nate Young finishes his set to a rapture of applause proving the masses are pleased to have him back!

Last set of the night comes from Bang On, a rapper from Liverpool who immediately has me intrigued. His delivery takes me back to the days of religiously watching ‘Yo Raps!’ as a youngster. I'm engaged throughout the set and especially overwhelmed by his last number holding a strong dubstep flavour any Chase & Status fan would thoroughly enjoy. Bang On is a name I’ll definitely be looking out for in future…

The mic opens up and tonight it is truly open… the entries coming forward on this occasion are not only entertaining but highly talented. Getting spoken word from Detox, reggae from Moses and an array of rappers putting it down, Detox manages to fight off the opposition to secure a place for himself on the bill, opening up the show when ILUVLIVE returns on June 27th.

Album Review: Katy B - On A Mission

Following Katy B’s steps since she teamed up with DJ NG & MC Versatile to bring the groundbreaking UK Funky track Tell Me, for me this is an album that has been more than heavily anticipated. On the cards for a few years, On A Mission is finally available for purchase. The teasers have made us all thirsty for more and holding single releases that have reached Top 5 positions in the national charts, the figures have spoken for themselves that I’m not alone.

Providing a diverse array of genres from the underground scene, Katy B’s vocals sit like a beautiful harmony over bass, kicks, snares and chords alike. The production from Geeneus, Skream, Benga, Zinc and Magnetic Man is tight throughout adding to the delight and giving the project a 100% satisfaction level of value.

Jumping straight on to the tracks that have not yet been released, then reloading to the top to listen to the album as a whole, I couldn’t be more than happier with the purchase of On A Mission…..

Favourite tracks:
Perfect Stranger
Movement
Disappear

New Video: Time

New Music: Love Bass

Davinche tweeted this video link and I instantly had to drop everything and check it out..... Aren't I glad I did!!!

I first fell in love with Cleo Sol's vocals when she vocalled the UK Funky track 'Time To Let Go' in which she collaborated with Perempay N Dee and I've loved them ever since......

No longer a feature, Cleo Sol is back with a solo track and I'm absolutely loving this dubstep track produced by DaVinche titled 'Love Bass'

I think it's HARD!!!! So many artist who have stepped over to the dubstep genre have felt a need to mimick Katy B & Magnetic Man. DaVinche and Cleo Sol have made a statement within their music showing real creativity and innovation. Something I absolutely rate to the MAX!!!!

Versatile Lets Go

When I was told about Versatile making a track with Farah, I was expecting something totally different to what we see here as the end product.

Being 'the host with the most' reknowned for The Funky Anthem alongside Crazy Cousinz, Versatile has completely stepped out of the box ditching the 'simple lyrics and simple flows' that previously were his trademark. Not too sure about his new lyrical flow though, conferring with a few rappers or grime artists may have been beneficial to give the track an extra level of weight. However collaborating with Dialtone on the buttons was definitely a great move.... The bass on this is AMAZING!!!!

New Video: Natalie May - Closer

Natalie May made a remarkable entrace into the homegrown music scene when she teamed up with Rudimental to bring us the UK funky banger Sexy Sexy. Now Natalie May is back and has stepped over to the dubstep genre and teamed up with a producer named GKid to bring us Closer. The video filmed in Clapham and Waterloo Bridge, London during a snow spell, I can't help to think how cold she must have been during some of these scenes......

The track has already received major support being played on radio stations such as BBC 1Xtra and featured on many DJ mixes and music blogs, however there has been some criticism floating about the track, that it lacks creativity; the production sounds too similar to Magnetic Man's I Need Air and vocals sound too similar to that of Katy B. I cannot deny that I can understand the angle these criticisms are coming from, but I can still appreciate this track as an original piece of music. Whilst there must have been heavy influence of the aforementioned during composition, what was produced still shows undeniable talent.... As in I am feeling the sound of Natalie's vocals!!!

Closer is released via iTunes on 14th February 2011
with remixes from Ts7, Ramzi, Lucky Charmes and Rudimental
