Mixtape Review: Smiler – All I Know
His previous mixtape Clarity caused a major storm on the underground causing his name to leak over into the mainstream. Receiving recognition from Fearne Cotton on BBC Radio One and becoming one to watch as a current breakthrough artist, Smiler releases another mixtape titled All I Know.Having mastered his craft along the way, Smiler’s flow comfortably rides over the beats, applied at a quality that those who have supported him during his climb will know this is Smiler at his finest thus far. In the meantime, Smiler makes it clear that he is happy with his progress, yet within ‘Feel It Coming’ shows that he is far from his coveted spot. This is understandable, considering the calibre of this project.
In addition to Smiler’s outward display to where he is at present, the mixtape sees features from other favoured artists and includes current favourite Delorean featuring Wretch 32 and boasts spectacular production with basslines and melodies capable of getting a pensioner who knows good music to simultaneously start banging their head along to the beats.
The only negative aspect of this mixtape is the length in entirety, or lack of it. 10 tracks and 35 minutes in total, it’s possible that I’m requesting too much from a mixtape. But hopefully, Smiler will take the comment in his stride and now he’s signed to Warner Music, there’s no reason why he can’t get in the studio and get recording his long awaited nice lengthy album!

Mixtape Review: Angel - Any Minute Now
As time has passed I've subconsciously fallen in love with Angel’s vocals. Personally I think that’s the best way. You know when you’ve asked a few times who the singer on a track is with delight and keep getting told the same name? Well that’s what happened with Angel. Baring this in mind, there was no hesitation to download his mixtape and give it a good thorough listen before commenting.
Piece of Everything completely smashed it for me, funny because it’s only the intro! But if you’re as big of a fan as I am of the Jamaican film Shottas, this will reach the levels of them old skool intros you reload couple times for the sheer entertainment value. Throughout the mixtape there are some nice renditions, however I have to say the cover of Coldplay’s Paradise had me cringing. Some things are too beautiful in their original form to be touched. That said, teaming up with Mark Asari and bringing back the 80’s vibe, shows another level of innovation that has to be commended.

New Video: Take Our Time
Shakka
Once again I've been blown away by a new show of innovation.... The first time I watched this video, I sat staring at everything that was happening in the background. Have a look and see what I mean....
I'm sure I'll continue to enjoy this video just as much, no matter how many times I watch it. Such a great piece of work!

New Video: Money Everyday
K.I.G. Family
I find it so hard to accept a song that doesn't seem like it's truly reflecting the life experience of the artist. This is one of them....
The recent publicity via BBC 3's Music, Money & Hip Hip Honeys came to mind when seeing the quality of the girls featured nearer the end of the video. This would indicate cutting of corners somewhere.... But most of all, I'm disappointed with the calibre of the songwriting. Personally I think that with so many minds on the case, something a lot stronger could've been composed. Just my opinion though... Which doesn't mean it's gospel or fact. Would be interesting to know what anyone else thinks.... If they would care to comment??

Creative Remixes
I've admittedly been slacking on the blogging recently, but that never means my ear isn't still firmly against the ground with eyes wide open on the look out for something fresh and new... While I've apparently been lurking in the shadows, there have been some remixes that I'm appreciating for the twist of creativity that has been used with them, showing a strong flare of innovation for both pieces of work I am referring to...
First exhibit comes from within the My-ish camp by Incisive. Using Wretch 32's previous top 10 hit single Traktor, Incisive & Shakka have twisted it around and made it into a song they can call their own.

Have a listen...
Another exerting her abilities is songstress A.L. who has definitely gone from strength to strength throughout 2011 to leave a mark that won't be easily forgotten. Taking I'm A Boss from US Hip-Hop superstars Meek Mill and Rick Ross, the track has been flipped on it's head to give it a more easy listening jazz aura.
Check it out...
Any aspiring musicians definitely need to take note from these two... What I mean by that is just about anybody can get a backing track and write quirky new lyrics, but a true musician is able to take a great composition and make it their own without destroying the memory of the original.... Salutes!

Interview: A Q&A session with Wyen Solo
What is your musical background?
I started singing at a very young age, I took part in many school plays growing up and I just loved being on the stage entertaining people. At 12 years old I went to a workshop where I recorded my first ever track 'I’m Going To Try' and from there I knew that's what I wanted to do. I went on to study music in college after I received the necessary grades to get on my course. Now 5 years on here I am.
How did you break into the industry?
I was introduced to the owner of a music label by a family member. At the time he had been saying he was looking for a singer. We sat down and had a meeting, then before I knew it, I was recording my first single.
Did you find it hard to get people to take note of your talent?
I still find it very hard to get people to take me seriously as I have come up via two different routes. Doing the underground thing, which is fun, but also in a sense being involved in mainstream work such as the Universal compilations and receiving award nominations so early on.
Your first two singles have featured on Universal compilations, how did that come about?
I believe that if you put the work in, you will receive great outcomes. I have written every song I have recorded. My first two singles 'Smile' and 'Take Your Time' are two of my favourite songs. I believe luck had a lot to do with being featured on the albums but I also think communication and teamwork also played a big part.
Bobby & Steve and executive producer Michael Hughes done a house remix of your first track Smile, what has it been like working with them?
It was really fun working with these guys, especially as they are well known within the house scene. As soon as I heard the mix I loved it and couldn't wait to perform it live.
I know you’ve been doing a few performances, how have you found the various experiences?
It’s so funny I have done so many performances over the last six months and all of them have been different... Big crowds and small crowds yet I still feel so nervous it’s unreal! I try my best to channel the nerves into adrenaline, but I wouldn't stop performing it’s one of my favourite aspects of the job.
Is there any particular one that stood out to you?
I enjoyed doing Groove Odyssey, which was to over 3000 people. To see that many people is so over whelming, but then to hear people singing along to your songs and sticking cameras and phones in your face, it’s an amazing rush that you wish you could experience every day.
I hear you’re also working on an album at the moment. How is that going?
I refer to the album as my baby. It takes time to grow, but you know when it arrives it is going to be this precious creation that you’re proud of and that never gets old. You love it more each day! I haven't given out much info on the album, but I can say it’s like an exciting juke-box!!!
Are there any other artists or producers you would like to work with in future?
My list of people I would like to work with is never ending… Lewi White, Will Smith, Devlin, Ed Sheeran, Rihanna and definitely Adelle.
Have you signed to a label as yet?
I'm not signed to a major label as yet, but I am with an independent label. I find that once you’re with a label you see so many different aspects of the industry and see your building your name as a brand... You almost want to be very hands on with the business side as well as the practical side.
Do you have management?
I do have management who again tend to deal with the business side of things, but like I always say to people, just because you have management don't take that as a reason to get lazy. You’re the product and you’re the brand, so be as involved as possible as it’s all learning.
We have heard that you are getting lots of love from Canada, the US and in the Bahamas, how do you feel about that?I love the fact that I'm at the beginning of my career and all ready I have an international following. I can not wait until I'm in a position to be touring and meeting all these amazing people who message me and download my music. It’s so nice knowing that although I appeal to people in the UK, people overseas also enjoy my music.
Is there anything else you have coming up that you’d like everybody to keep an eye out for?
I’ll be attending the BEFFTA awards as I have been nominated for best female act. It’s very exciting I have all ready won a 'Top Star' award this year for ‘Smile’ so to be up for another award is really exciting. I'm planning to be busy over Christmas doing gigs, which I will post on my Facebook fan page and my Twitter.
Where can people find you on the web?
I'm on Twitter @wyensolo and I have a Facebook fan page ‘Wyen Solo’. I have also started a blog so check that out at www.wyensoloofficial.tumblr.com

Chipmunk Dropped?
There has been heavy speculation regarding whether Chipmunk has been dropped by his label Jive (Sony) due to a reshuffle and a desire to cut costs. His track Champion which featured US R&B superstar Chris Brown is reported to have cost £90,000 for the feature alone. With costs like these, Chipmunk's latest chart positions have not been viewed as value for money. Costing more revenue than he is bringing in.
Add this to his recent Twitter rants and the comments made on his recent F64 with SBTV, does the news of him being dropped really come as a surprise?

It hasn't been officially revealed that Chipmunk has parted ways with his label, but to many industry insiders this comes as 'old news'. Reports are currently being rubbished, but eventually time will tell.....

One to Watch: Yungen
Whilst conducting a radio interview with The Fives I was tipped to look out for a young rapper going by the name of Yungen....
Since I've seen his Hustle Hard freestyle courtesy of SBTV
And this feature alongside Geneva from X-Factor's Belle Amie
Able to fit both sides of the coin, eyes are firmly locked to Yungen!

Recommended: Danso - S.O.W. Vol 1

Son of William Vol.1 shows that the artist named Danso holds a large amount of talent, able to generate an eclectic flow over various genres. Being a producer as well as an artist, something tells me there is something special about Danso. If caught sleeping, there seems to be serious danger that one could miss out!!

New Video: Devlin ft Labrinth - Let It Go
Upon first viewing of this video, I really liked the concept. But the more I watch it the more I wonder why Devlin is so depicted as an angry young man? Though very fitting for the track, after 3.11 a glimpse of the serenity longed for after 'letting go', would've been a nice spin on the video and enabled the 'lighter hearted' side of Devlin's character briefly captured at 3.20 a chance to shine.
Labrinth's feature is also highly recognised. As a producer/artist that hasn't been particuarly represented in many of the past productions of which he has played part within the composition, Let It Go pays deserved dues to Labrinth who hit the charts earlier this year with his solo single Let The Sun Shine.

What A Funkin Damned DAY!!!
Yesterday a fellow music journalist who I actually have a lot of respect for (he's done some dope interviews with people like Busy Signal, Taurrus Riley, Jah Cure and all a dem reggae musician dem my parents regularly hold a vybe to), had attended an event for the underground music sub-genre I have become fairly acquainted with, UK Funky.
Being a blogger it was only natural for him to then write a review. The review wasn't what is usually seen within the UK Funky Scene, where everybody gives it a good response and then mutters to their nearest folk what their true thoughts are.... It was an outsiders view. An observation of events with some positive and some negative points, both going to their extremes respectively.
When first reading it I had to wonder how it would be perceived. Knowing had I written something of that nature, it would be considered faux pas. Consequently, I would automatically become branded a hater and probably be stoned the next time I tried to show attendance at any kind of UK Funky associated event. But I thought that as an 'outsider' of the scene, his negative comments would be taken on with grace allowing reflection on areas that can be worked on to make the UK Funky scene a bigger and better movement, really strong enough for world domination. I felt that it would show however whether or not the same people who are constantly accused of being 'gassed up' were really as grounded as they should be, seen as they are artists in such a minute area of the music industry. The day ended calmly..... No qualms?? Great!
Next day however, the review has made the rounds and the reactions have shown that many are not able to take criticism and turn it into a positive for the bettering of themselves. Something I find quite disheartening. It seems UK Funky has become a genre of artist that are only willing to hear 'songs of praise' and if you ain't singing, you're a sinner, condemned to hell because YOU don't get up on a stage TOO. They have the hardest job in the world, so we must bow down to their mercy. But this is the music business. Everybody plays their own part. From artist to journalist, from producers, video directors and A&Rs. NONE of us have a easy ride when it comes to longevity. Unfortunately as the artist, you're at the forefront, but you gotta take the rough with the smooth!
Disclaimer: This is in no way aimed towards all of the acts that performed at the said event, or everybody who was originally mentioned within the review. This is an expression of my thoughts towards those who responded to the comments within the review with animosity. Whoever the cap fits let them wear......
