Album Review: Katy B - On A Mission

Following Katy B’s steps since she teamed up with DJ NG & MC Versatile to bring the groundbreaking UK Funky track Tell Me, for me this is an album that has been more than heavily anticipated. On the cards for a few years, On A Mission is finally available for purchase. The teasers have made us all thirsty for more and holding single releases that have reached Top 5 positions in the national charts, the figures have spoken for themselves that I’m not alone.

Providing a diverse array of genres from the underground scene, Katy B’s vocals sit like a beautiful harmony over bass, kicks, snares and chords alike. The production from Geeneus, Skream, Benga, Zinc and Magnetic Man is tight throughout adding to the delight and giving the project a 100% satisfaction level of value.

Jumping straight on to the tracks that have not yet been released, then reloading to the top to listen to the album as a whole, I couldn’t be more than happier with the purchase of On A Mission…..

Mighty Moe says “Yagga Yo!”

Many were feeling overwhelmed by the news at the start of the year that Heartless Crew had parted ways. Major longstanding contributors to the underground music scene for more than a decade, the trio had touched the hearts of many throughout the years. Bushkin stated in his video which revealed all the news that Mighty Moe had a banging CD on it’s way… Less than a month later, here it is!!

Mighty Moe had collaborated with a vast number of other musicians in the production of the mixtape, including Todd Edwards, Zed Bias, Benga and highly affiliated Smasher. The two have combined forces on a number of the tracks showing how diverse their talents are, coming together on my favourite on the mixtape titled ‘Sometimes’ where we get to hear Mighty Moe sing along to a melody you only wish was truly acoustic to give its full capable kick. The duo bring it to another level on ‘Gassed’. I quote “Them man are gassed, them man are talking trash on tracks…”, if you’d like to hear what else is said, you’ll have to download a copy of the mixtape, but the forward is definitely necessary when Mighty Moe draws for one of his foundation bars totally shutting down.

Katy B Takes The Throne!!

Katy B has had a remarkable year. First she entered into the national charts at #5 with her dubstep smash 'On A Mission', now the songstress has taken the throne in the UK Funky genre as holding the highest chart position with an impressive entry at #4 with 'Lights On' which features the legendary Ms Dynamite.

I'd like Katy B to hold a position within the top ten next week so ensure you continue buying!

New Release: Meleka - Love Letter

I've been watching Meleka for a while. The lovely lady first caught my attention with her debut track 'Go'. The track was first released having won the HUGO Boss Urban Rules competition and the Crazy Cousins remix really put her on the map. After seeing her perform at I Luv Live I could see exactly why she won. Her performace and voice absolutely blew me away.

Having gained a reputation within the UK Funky circuit, Meleka continued work with Crazy Cousins to release 'Miss Me'. Now the young lady has stepped into another genre to bring us 'Love Letter'. With Dubstep on the evident rise, it has to be questioned whether this change has come in light of the success Katy B has been having alongside Magnetic Man, Skream, Benga, Zinc and the many others.



However, Love Letter does still show Meleka's music talents. Her voice sits nicely over the dubstep drum pattern and can be appreciated. As the first release from her upcoming EP titled 'Next', let's hope the change of genre pays off for her.

On Katy's Mission!

She first grabbed my attention on the vocals of the UK Funky classic 'Tell Me' when she teamed up with DJ NG & MC Versatile. Her follow up 'As I' produced by Geeneus was arguably my favourite funky track of 2009, it still sends me on a frenzy that requires me to close my eyes and start spinning around to get the full enjoyment.

More recently Katy teamed up with Benga and brought us On A Mission which is undoubtedbly one of the biggest tracks to come out of the UK this year and definitely a major track on the Dubstep scene. Holding position within the national charts for a number of weeks, I think it's fair to state that Katy B is not only on a mission, the young lady is seriously about to blow!! (Errrrm..... not sure about that statement, has she blown already?)

Anyway...... Katy has now teamed up with Magnetic Man (I Need Air) to bring us Perfect Stranger, and also Zinc to bring us Louder.

I haven't yet had the chance to meet Katy B, but I'm sure she'd agree that it's something that needs to happen soon..... What d'you reckon Katy?? I'm on your mission with ya!!!!
